Over the past thirty years, Motoshi Matsunaga has traveled with his sketchbook and watercolors to a wide range of countries in Europe and elsewhere. This exhibition includes sketches of architecture and landscapes from Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, France and more.

There is a deep relationship between “creating architecture” and “observing architecture.” To Motoshi, the observation of architecture includes everything from leaving for a trip to standing on the ground and observing a building while taking in with one’s five senses the fragrance of the air, the temperature and humidity, sounds and the light of the sun; from being guided to a building to reaching it. When creating a work of architecture, he brings back those feelings and the images of light and shadows. Recalling what he has seen with his eyes and sketched with his hands, he draws what comes to mind and then creates it. This relationship between input and output is the foundation upon which he creates architecture.
With this exhibition, he hopes you will get a sense of the unseen relationship between landscapes as seen through the eyes of an architect and actual works of architecture.
